COMMON EXPECTATIONS OF ALL STAFF

This statement accompanies all job descriptions in the Technical Services Division, UM Libraries. It sets forth behaviors, attitudes and competencies all TSD employees are expected to have or attain. This statement is in the context of a team-based organization, where flexibility, adaptability, teamwork ethos, mutual respect and shared decision-making are key to success. The term group below can mean a team, division, department, unit or other subdivision of the organization. More information on the UM Libraries as a team-based organization is in working papers available in the UM Libraries Web site.

Expectations of All Staff

  1. Focuses on the customer.
  2. Is committed to quality.
  3. Identifies effective processes and incorporates them into work processes.
  4. Participates and contributes positively in teamwork, partnerships, committees and other group work in and for the Libraries.
  5. Promotes an atmosphere of collegiality and professional commitment and represents the Libraries in a proactive way.
  6. Learns and abides by university and library policy and procedure.
  7. Is dependable, reliable and accountable for individual and group work.
  8. Communicates easily, appropriately and clearly.
  9. Understands and is committed to the principles of diversity.
  10. Employs basic computer skills and learns applications specific to ones job.
  11. Continues to learn and master new skills.

Expectations of Staff in Formal Leadership Positions

  1. Uses strategic vision to motivate and inspire.
  2. Empowers employees at all levels to succeed; supports and challenges everyone to learn, improve and produce.
  3. Facilitates the work of the group, stays alert to group's needs, responds to needs, reallocates resources.
  4. Accumulates and shares internal knowledge, including documentation of group's policies and procedures.
  5. Gathers and integrates external information; coordinates work of group with other groups.
  6. Challenges the status quo and enables creativity.
  7. Models the expectations of all staff.
