Raymond Dvorak Papers
Abstract
Raymond Dvorak (1900-1982) was a conductor and Director of Bands for the University of Illinois and the University of Wisconsin. Elected to the ABA in 1933, he served as President in 1959 and was made an honorary live member in 1980. A John Phillip Sousa enthusiasts, the bulk of the collection focuses upon Dvorak's efforts to have Sousa elected to the Hall of Fame for Great Americans, resulting in an extensive collection of signed letters from musicians including Meredith Willson, Lawrence Welk, Doc Severinson, Vincent Persichetti, Arthur Fiedler, William Schuman, and Otto Luening; and letters from politicians such as Adlai Stevenson, Barry Goldwater, Jimmy Carter, Nelson Rockefeller, Ronald Reagan, Hubert Humphrey, Phil Gramm, and Pete Domenici. The collection also contains programs, articles, limited personal correspondence, and professional papers relating to Dvorak's professional life as a conductor.
