Borrowing Privileges

UMD Graduate Students may borrow non-circulating or restricted library materials in some cases.

This section applies to currently employed and emeriti faculty members only. If you are a retired UMD faculty member, please refer to the UMD Retirees section below.

Contractual employees may not always receive library privileges automatically. They can be requested as needed.

A Regular Affiliate is someone who is not a student or employee of the university, but who is given access to limited university services by a sponsoring UMD department.

UMD Regular Affiliates may borrow UMD materials only. Materials located in off-site storage may be requested.
 

A Research Affiliate is a person who is given library access based on a formal Memo of Understanding between the university and a non-university agency or organization.

UMD Research Affiliates may borrow UMD materials and may request items from Severn Library.

**Materials from USMAI cannot be borrowed directly, but may be requested through Interlibrary Loan.

UMD Employee Designees and Fellow Designees may borrow UMD materials only.


Employee Designee library privileges are set up through the Community Borrowers and Researchers form.

To continue receiving privileges/ a new ID card, retirees must contact the Office of Employee Benefits to activate their retiree status as explained on the Retiree Campus Privileges page.

Library privileges for members of the Golden ID Program are only available during the semesters that the student is enrolled in at least one class.

Other Colleges or Universities

*Big Ten Library users do not have access to these services through the University of Maryland, but they may be available through their home institutions.

Borrowed items are subject to recall. However, CIRLA Faculty and Graduate Students may not recall items from other users.

Faculty from OCLC Reciprocal Faculty Borrowing institutions

*OCLC Faculty do not have access to these services through the University of Maryland, but they may be available through their home institutions.

  • ID Required: Community Borrowers Card and photo ID
  • Cost of Borrowing: $25 current UMD Alumni Association members and Friends of the Library (regardless of residency), $50 in-state resident, $100 out-of-state resident; free to some Lifetime Members (membership obtained prior to 04/01/12), as well as NASA Goddard, NOAA, and FDA employees with valid ID
  • Loan Period: Up to 30 days
  • Renewals Allowed: 1
  • Maximum Loans: 25 items at any one time
  • Equipment Loan: No
  • Interlibrary Loan Items and Digital Copies: No
  • USMAI Privileges: No
  • Book Paging: Available*
  • Remote Access to Databases and eBooks: No
  • Late Night Study: No
  • Wifi Access: With eduroam or umd-guest only.
