Request Pick Up at a Service Desk
Once you have located an item in UMD Discover (our catalog), you may request it. Circulating books and media from any campus library may be delivered either to a different library on campus or to the service desk at the library where the item is housed.
Note: E-books and items with the status “On Shelf/Non-Circulating” cannot be requested for pickup. Digital copies or scans of journal articles, book chapters, and E-books may be requested from your Interlibrary Loan account.

To see any request or access options, you must first Sign In. Once signed in, clicking the title of the item will bring you to the access and request options for an item. If an item’s status in the catalog says “Item in place,” you should be able to request it through the UMD Discover.
Request Item
To Request the material, make sure you are signed in, then go to the UMD Discover record of the item you want to request (Click here for instructions on finding materials in UMD Discover).
- Look in the “Get It” section, then click on the “Request” link.
- Or, if the material is listed “out of library”, or if it is only available at another USMAI library, you should be able to request it using the “Request (USMAI)” button on the same page in either the “Get It” or “How To Get It” Sections.
- After clicking a request link, select the branch you would like the material sent to for your pickup. Finally, select the date we should cancel your request or send it back if you haven't picked it up (picking an earlier date will not speed up your request). Then click "Send Request".
- You will see the "Your request was successfully placed" notification when the hold has been been requested for pickup.
Pick Up Item
If there are no holds on the book you selected and the book is on the shelf, it will be delivered to the branch you selected within a few business days. You will be notified by email when the material is ready for pickup. Please come to the service desk with your University or other photo ID to borrow it.
Cancel or Modify Request
If you want to check on your requests, you can go to "My Account" to check on the status of the item, or to delete/remove your request if it no longer is needed. If your material is ready to be picked up, it will say “on hold until: (date)” in the status field.
You may cancel a request if an item is still in process. Click “Cancel” beside the title, then “Cancel it” to complete cancellation.
Note: Hold requests can only be deleted while the status of the hold request is still “In process.” If you need to change the cancel/end hold date or pick up location of your request after it is already on hold, please email askmckcirc@umd.edu.
